The Starfurl Furling Boom

A luxury within the reach of all boats

The Starfurl furling boom has been designed to allow small crews to deal quickly directly from the cockpit with the main sail manouvers such as hoisting, lowering and taking the reef. The mainsail is rolled inside the boom and managed through a loop line operated from the cockpit winches. The halyard will remain independent from the new system. This setup allows the sail to be lowered without using the winder.

The mainsail is like a traditional full-batten design, modified in geometry to allow it to be rolled into the boom. The sail maintains its surface area and allows for a generous roach.

In addition, it can be made with advanced fabrics and preformant for racing or fast cruising, while remaining well-protected and wrapped in the boom.

CHARACTERISTICS

Strenght and Lightness

Made with high modulus fibers and epoxy resin, it ensures the best characteristics of strength and lightness.

Comfort in maneuvering

Hoisting and lowering the sail, as well as reefing, can be comfortably and safely managed by one person from inside the cockpit.

Performance and safety

Thanks to its characteristics it remains the safest roller shutter system. Even if the system becomes stuck, the mainsail can still be safely lowered.

Aesthetics and innovation

The system allows the owner to move beyond old, outdated concepts with its innovative aesthetics and practical design.

Sailing performant

Unlike other roller shutter systems, the mainsail retains all the characteristics of a high-performance sails, including a generous roach and full-batten system.

PARTS OF THE SYSTEM INCLUDE:

The boom is crafted from composite materials and tailored in terms of weight, length, and volume to suit each boat specifically.  The gooseneck, boom kicker, and sheet are custom-made, enhancing their suitability for value-added refitting on the boat.

The rail installed on the mast allows the luff of the sail to slide without the need for additional assistance. Furthermore, a ramp is installed at the base of the mast to assist the sail in sliding from the boom to the mast. There are different types of rails available depending on the size of the boat.

The loop line operates the mechanics of the boom’s rolling system. It will be installed on the outhaul or reef line’s stopper. These lines will then be removed.
Alternatively, the setup will be customized in the most suitable way to perform the maneuver and integrated on board.  The boat will then be freed from the reef line and the outhaul, which will remain inside the boom. Additionally, the lazy bag will be removed, giving the boat a much cleaner and more modern profile.

The hoist manoeuvre

The mainsail will then be hoisted from the cockpit. The boat needs to be kept bow to the wind. The boom will be  held in position by the topping lift or boom kicker, ensuring it is correctly positioned neither too high nor too low compared to the sail’s optimal position.

After that, to execute the hoisting maneuver, simply pull the halyard and release the loop line. This will allow the sail to go up.

The maneuver to lower

To lower or reef the mainsail, keep the boat bow to the wind and ensure the boom height is correct. Activate the closed circuit on the winch and release the halyard  . When the system is engaged, the sail will be rolled into the boom. If you only need to reduce the mainsail, the rolling will stop at the desired position to resume sailing.

Why do I need to change my boom with a STARFURL BOOM?

Changing to a STARFURL BOOM is a good choice because not all crew members may be experienced sailors, especially during family trips or when sailing solo. This upgrade ensures that you can easily reef or lower the mainsail quickly and safely, even in strong winds, without needing extensive sailing expertise

The new system allows for maneuvers in safety for the crew, who can perform them comfortably from the cockpit with minimal physical effort and without difficulty.

Moored boat: The design of the rolling boom structure enhances protection from UV rays and salt exposure; The cockpit is now free from the tangled cables of Lazy Jacks and the bulky Lazy Bag. Stowing the mainsail is also greatly simplified. The new boom also enables aesthetic enhancements, such as installing LED spotlights to illuminate the cockpit.

Easy installation: Installing the StarFurl roller system, designed by Veleria Viganò, does not require disembarking the boat or modifying the deck or mast fittings. This allows for installation directly from the berth or on-site, making it versatile, non-invasive, and ideal for refitting or upgrading your boat.
